Another special rendering effect that became available when we started using mental ray as the alternative renderer is
one we all know: the motion blur effect. If a camera’s shutter speed is slower than an object’s movement, there will
be a blurred effect of both the object and the
shadows cast by the object. Motion blur is
the result of the relative movement of the
object and the camera. The term relative is
used since objects, lights, and cameras can
move or stand still compared with each
other. For mental ray, this is not important; it
can apply Motion Blur in all different combinations.
Open the file Motionblur.max and render
    the scene (Figure 2.248).
In this file, there is an animation of a jumping
shirt. Just hit the play button to see the
total animation. Now open Render Scene
    dialog Renderer panel Camera Effect

Check the Enable switch in the Motion Blur group to generate
motion blur. Next, move to frame 100 of the animation
because we need movement to generate the motion
blur effect. Because the animation starts from a standstill,
there cannot be motion blur at the first frame.
To be able to generate motion blur, you also need to check
the object’s properties. So, select the shirt and use your right
mouse button to select the Object Properties option in
the Quad menu. Check Object Properties dialog box General panel Motion Blur group to enable it. If it is
not enabled, there will be no motion blur. Also, the Object option should be chosen; otherwise, there won’t be
an effect. Since we had the Blur All Objects option on in the Motion Blur group in the Render Scene dialog, the
settings per object are overruled now. It is a good habit to
check for the state of this setting. The Image option is only
relevant for rendering with the scanline render engine
    (Figure 2.250).
Now you can render the scene again (Figure 2.251).
We see the motion blur, both for the object
as well as the shadows that are present. This
shadow blurring is special for mental ray.
The regular scanline renderer is not able to
achieve this type of effect for shadows.
What happens is that mental ray samples the
surface of the moving object multiple times
during the time set (shutter duration). The
pixel of the image is the same while the
shutter is open, but the color changes over
time because of the movement of the
object. In the end, the different color samples
are combined into one final color for
    the pixel itself.
Now it is time to play with the settings, so
open the Motion Blur group again (Figure
    2.252).
Enable and Blur All Objects are obvious, so
there is no need to go into these options.
Just be careful not to blur everything inside your scene because the calculation will then be applied to all objects,
even those for which it is not important. This will add render time. Since we used the Blur All Objects option,
the background is also blurred, which was a waste of render time
The Shutter Duration option simulates the shutter speed
of a camera in real life. When this option is 0, there is no
motion blur. The next image shows what happens if the
duration is set to 2. The value is based on one frame, so
our sample of two means that we simulate a movement
in the next image of what happens in two frames in one
    single option (Figure 2.253).
The Shutter Offset can offset the motion blur inside the image. The value is a relative value toward the frame, as
is seen clearly with the next set of images. This option delays the opening of the shutter in comparison with the
    shutter speed, which you have set. So what you see with a setting of 1 is what happened in the previous frame;
a setting of +1 means you would see what happens in the next frame. In other words; if you were to make the setting

Motion Segment defines how many times the object’s motion is sampled within one frame. This setting is not
important if you have a linear motion, but if you have a curved motion, like the movement of the arms of the
shirt, you would need to adjust the setting. The arms make a curved movement; without Motion Segment the
motion blur lines would be straight where they are supposed to be curved. Since we hardly have this kind of
motion in our sample scene, we will not use this option.

The next option is Time Samples. (Make sure you reset the Shutter Offset to 0,25 before moving on.) (Figures
    2.256 and 2.257)
By default, the material is shaded only once and then blurred. If you need better quality, use a larger value for this setting.
Of course, the render time will go up too. The number of samples is calculated based on contrast value over time,
so if the contrast changes, more samples are taken. Greater contrasts create lesser-quality images; lower contrast settings
give better-quality motion blur and images.
To speed up the process for motion blur, there is an alternative technique called Fast Rasterizer. What is Fast
Rasterizer, rapid motion blur? As you probably understand, animations require less quality with the Motion Blur
effect because of the speed of the movement of the individual frames and the slowness of our eyes. We simply do
not detect this lesser quality. For this scene, we could do with a less accurate calculation method. Fast Rasterizer
allows mental ray to save samples for specific areas on the surface of moving objects. It reuses this information
when the same area is visible from another sample on another pixel. The result is much fewer calls to the material
shaders of the moving objects, which are almost the same. The effect is that the same samples are being stretched
over the image, which is not the case in reality because changes do happen. Of course, the result is less accurate,
but with an animation, this technique can be a big time saver.
This option is also found in the Renderer panel, this time in the Rendering Algorithms rollout.
The Samples per Pixel controls the number of samples,
and the Shader per Pixel controls the approximate number
of shading calls per pixel used by the Fast Rasterizer
method. Higher values create better results at the cost of
    rendering time.
If you want to see the difference between speed and quality,
just open the Fast_rasterizer.max file. We have prepared
the scene so you just have to move to frame 100 and
hit Render to get a first motion blur rendering without

the Fast Rasterizer option turned on. Keep your eye out for quality and total render time. For both options, we will
use the default settings so that there is no cheating going on in the background (Figure 2.259).
This is the rendering without the Fast Rasterizer option enabled. The total render time on the laptop I used for this
    model was almost 2 minutes.
Now turn on the Fast Rasterizer option and render again (Figure 2.260).
Although there is a difference, it is hard to notice. The major difference is the render time, which went down to
about 30 seconds. (Note that Fast Rasterizer needs to have mental ray area shadows active; otherwise, it doesn’t
motion blur the shadows.) For people who are interested to see what the final animation would look like, there is
a movie file on the DVD that shows the finished version using the Fast Rasterizer option.
One final note: in our sample, we used a moving piece of clothing. But not only did the clothing itself move, the
height position of the total shirt also changed in the animation. For these two cases, mental ray uses two different
techniques. For the actual motion blur inside the clothing, mental ray uses the Motion Vectors technique. For the
moving of the shirt, it uses the Motion Transformation technique

of shutter speed and the delay the same, there would be no motion blur. (If you want to render the same
images, make sure you reset the duration value to 0,5.) (Figures 2.254 and 2.255)
