– Rigging and Animation
By performing the steps in this project, you will have demonstrated an ability to:
Model Requirements
Model a 6 legged mechanical creature of you own design. After modeling, UV and texture your creature appropriately.
Include a pair of arms that you may experiment with the rigging and animating process as well.
Add a basic environment and lighting (direct and image based) to enhance the model.
The polygon budget for this model is 8000polygons.
Note: Include any additions or changes from your instructor.
Functional Requirements
Create a rig for your creature that includes animator-friendly controls.
Bind the model geometry to your rig using parenting.
Set your animation preferences to 30 fps, and the overall length of your animation to 700 frames.
Animate the rig to perform a suitable walk cycle (20 frame cycle).
Attach the global control of your rig to a motion path and animate it for a total of 700 frames.
Completion Requirements
The final movie that is submitted must be a movie created using the supplied After Effects project.
Follow these steps to create the required renders:
Project Directory Structure and Contents
The Project directory must be located in the c:\temp directory.
Here are the expected contents of each of the directories:

– Rigging and Animation
By performing the steps in this project, you will have demonstrated an ability to:
- Model, UV, and Texture mechanical (inorganic) creature suitable for rigging,
- Construct a basic rig for a mechanical creature
- Use parenting to bind the model geometry to the rig,
- Animate the rig to perform a simple walk cycle on a motion path.
- Use the Graph Editor to correct animation motions
- Use Playblast to capture a turntable animation

Completion Requirements
The final movie that is submitted must be a movie created using the supplied After Effects project.
Follow these steps to create the required renders:
- Create renders of the front, top, side and perspective viewports showing the bind pose of your model. Remember to correctly frame your shots.
- Open Outliner (expanded), Hypershade, and enable polygon display. Organize the window appropriately, and take a screenshot. Use Photoshop to crop and resize the screenshot as best as possible to fit a resolution of 1280 x 720.
- Capture the Graph Editor Window showing all of the animation f-curves.
- Use Playblast to capture a turntable animation of the model using the render settings. The turntable animation should be 700 frames.
- Batch render frames 1 to 20 of your walk cycle from each of the viewports. Remember to correctly frame the shots and ensure that the motion does not cause portions of the model to extend beyond the resolution gate.
- Batch render the motion path animation, 700 frames, from the perspective viewport.
- Stage the files using the directory structure outlined below and use the supplied After Effects project to create a movie for submission.
- Using Photoshop, create title and closing credit screens. If you do not require all 3 closing credit screens, include a black picture to stand in for them.
You must include an appropriate Title screen and at least one closing credit screen that includes your name and contact information (email address only).
