this is the render passes section
you can select you obects and put it in different lyers

the Bluie ball icon is to create layer with the selection .... if you select all obects in the scene and press this icon will create a layer including all selected objects.

the left one .... create new layer and you can add what you want in it

the drop down menu is the way you want to composite your layers....
it like photoshop layers mode but here when you select different mode for each layer this will affect it in the composite....
you can make any number of layer you want and render it in MAYA to see how it lloks without going to composite programe but be aware that iif you have a lot of layers every layer take a space from your ram memory so if you have many layers his will affect your ram memory
