EMERYVILLE, CA, March 10, 2004. Pixar is pleased to announce the release of RenderMan® Artist Tools, Version 6.0. This release provides support for many of the new features of RenderMan ProServer 11.5. New RAT features provide increased power, speed and flexibility.
Some of the highlights include:
* New Features
o NDC Occlusion Passes. Occlusion passes have been added, which allow the creation of ambient occlusion effects automatically, much like a shadow map or reflection map.
o Z-Stencil (Depthmask) Hider. Support has been added for the new z-stencil (depthmask) hider feature of PRMan 11.5.
o Custom Template Menu Configuration
o Lazy Template Loading. The slim.ini file now supports "lazy-load" syntax. This allows templates to be loaded only when they are used.
o New MTOR RenderMan Global entries, to provide additional scripting support, and to define external scripts to be run before, on error, or after rendering.
o Slim speed enhancements.
+ Optimizations have been made to querying appearances in palettes ("slim GetAppearances"). The changes yield about a 3x speedup for querying palettes.
+ Optimizations have been made to redrawing in the Palette Editor, making it more manageable when a large number (>100) of appearances are visible.
+ Optimizations have been made to code which generates the RIB representation of appearances ("slim GetRIB"). Significant speedup should be seen for shader networks larger than about 20 nodes.
o Ray tracing enhancements.
+ The raytrace.slim template has been updated to provide better out-of-box rendering speed, and to provide additional controls over rendering.
o New slim templates:
+ BuildColor — build a color from independent float channels.
+ RSLVarsF,C — visualizers for shading language "globals" (Cs, Os, N, I, etc.)
+ AOV — use Arbitrary Output Variables in a shader.
+ Do-It-Yourself additive shading model.
+ CombineDisplacement has been updated to support arbitrary layers.
+ Two new templates for combining color and float lists have been added: CombineFloat List and CombineColor List.
o MTOR RIB generators can now handle deforming motionblur, and RIB archives.
o MTOR now supports facevarying primitive variables.
o Enhancements to mtorUltraFur:
+ Fur on poly meshes is now supported.
+ Mapped fur attributes on Maya subdivision meshes now have correct UVs.
o Alfred Cmd and RemoteCmd scripting commands now support the "-samehost 1" option which in conjunction with "-atleast n" specifies that multiple acquired server slots must all be on the same physical host. This can be useful for multi-threaded or parallel-processing applications. There is a new RenderGlobals setting in MTOR to emit this flag as well.
