- Create a fountain of some sort with ordinary 3ds max tools. Make the radius of the widest part of the fountain about 150 units. The fountain shown below was made with two tubes and a cylinder. The fountain mateiral is made with Perlin Marble and Stucco maps. The water material is made with the Water map. Note that the water is a lavender color to reflect the lavender color of the fountain.
Don't be concerned if your fountain is primitive. This tutorial focuses on the water spurting from the fountain. You can always polish the actual fountain later.
- On the Create panel, click Geometry. From the pulldown menu, choose Particle Systems.
- Click on Super Spray. Click and drag in the Top viewport at the center of the fountain spigot to make the super spray icon. Pull the time slider to frame 30 to see the default super spray motion. The particles fly up out of the icon.
- On the Basic Parameters rollout under the Particle Formation section, change the two Spread parameters to 12 and 90 respectively. This spreads out the spray.
- On the Particle Type rollout under the Standard Particles section, change the particle type to Facing.
Facing particles are rectangles that always face the Perspective or Camera view. - On the Particle Generation rollout, change the following values.
- Speed: 12
- Variation (Speed): 20
- Emit Start: -100
- Emit Stop: 100
- Life: 35
- Variation (Life): 5
- Size: 1.75
- Variation (Size): 20
- Render the Perspective view. The particles appear in the scene.
Next you'll put a Gravity space warp in the scene. - On the Create panel, click Space Warps . From the pulldown menu, choose Particles & Dynamics if necessary. Click Gravity. Click and drag in the Top viewport to create the Gravity icon.
The size or location of the icon does not matter. All that matters is that the arrow on the icon is pointing in the correct direction. In this case, the correct direction is downward as viewed from the Front or Left viewport. - On the Main Toolbar, click Bind to Space Warp . Click and drag from the particle system to the Gravity space warp.
- Click Select object and click on the Gravity space warp to select it. On the panel, adjust the Strength parameter until the end of the spray just hits the ground. Start with a Strength of 0.5 and work from there. The picture below shows Gravity with a Strength of 0.4.
Next we'll put a material on each particle that makes them look like a water droplets. - Go to the Material Editor. Under the Maps rollout, click on the box labeled None across from Opacity and choose Gradient from the Material/Map Browser. The Gradient map will make the particle appear solid at the center, gradually becoming transparent at the edges.
- Change Gradient Type to Radial. Click and drag the color swatch from Color #1 to Color #3, and choose Swap.
- Click on Go to Parent . On the Basic Parameters rollout, turn on Face Map. This will map the gradient onto each facing particle. Also change Self lllumination to 100. Change the Diffuse color to a light blue. Apply the material to the particles.
- On the Maps rollout, click on the box labeled None across from Diffuse and choose Particle Age. The Particle Age map changes the color of each particle depending on its age. A particle is 0% old when it is emitted (born), then 100% old when it is about to disappear (die). Change the 0% color to a medium blue, and the 100% color to a pale blue. Render the Perspective view.
- The water is a little sparse. We'll need to add more particles for more water. To do this, locate the Use Rate parameter in the Particle Quantity section. Change the amount under this parameter to 75. Render the Perspective view. The frame takes longer to render, but the water looks more realistic.
- Render the animation in the Perspective view.
Don't spend too much time on materials until your scene is completely set up. Transparent particles look different against different backgrounds. Experiment with the Super Spray parameters such as Size, and with the material parameters, until the water fountain looks the way you want it to.
