  • How to understand Material and textures (Maxwolf is Back)

    AL-salam Alaikum ....
    guess who is back ....
it has been a very loooooooooooong time since my last visit here ...
    i missed you all

sorry for writing in English , but i still have problem with my Pc ...it does not write in Arabic ...no Arabic letters at all ....
if any one can translate this thread into Arabic , it would really be great ....

This is a small ... what can I call it ... an article ?! about texturing and material ....

Sorry ... it is not exactly as u might expected ... we won’t be talking about technics of texturing by a 3d product or by paint software ...

We will be talking about textures them self .... about the things that you should think oabout before u start on your paint or 3d project ....

For some time a go I found that I need to improve my self in material and texturing ... so I started reading about that topic , and some time a go , I was reading a book about digital painting , and I was disappointed that about half of the book talking about theories in materials and colors , and painting , before it starts talking about computer grafix ... but I was wrong ... I discovered that understanding materials concepts and color theories can really boost your work quality

so I liked to share u some of what I learned .....

Before u start ... u have to train your Eye !! Yes train your eye ... look a lot around you .. Look at every thing ... the table your setting in front , the chair your setting on , your hand , the keyboard , the dust over an old object , the trees out side , the stair steps , the window glass , the ...world ...
Look to it close , look to the colors , look at the dents , decay , dust , color variance , the color mixtures , its shadows , its state ... and ask your self ... why does it look OLD object ... why is feel COLD ?? , why does it look NEW .... why it look SOLID , why does it feel SOFT
... is it the color , the reflection , the surface condition , or is it ..what ??? what does
make the object look like that ... train your eye to identify the color , colors can be tricky ....

Look around you , take a break now for 2 minutes and look to the things around you know ...!!

    Now lets start ....

First of all you have too know what is the difference between texture and material ...
    Generally ....
Material : is the base substance of the surface ... , wood , steel , glass , metal
texture : you can say that it is adjective of that surface .... as when you say :
”rusty steel” ,”brushed aluminum” , “polished marble” , “shiny glass”

now ,when you look to an abject and want to mimic it’s surface into a painting or digital
one ... you have to ask your self few question about that object ..

A- What is the most important feature of that object ??
Is it the effect that it reflects over you , is it the feeling that gives you when
you look at it , or is it visual attraction that pulls your eyes too , what is the first thing
you see when you look to that object , what is the first thing u remember , or feel ...

B- What is the object made off??
The base material of the object affects it behavior to surrounding elements ...
    For example :
OLD metal can be Rusty and with Scratches
OLD glass can be Dirty and With Cracks
OLD cloth would have some dirts , spots , tears , here and there...
All the above materials are old ...but do they behave the same ??
If you are planing to model a steel object you should look before that to
different REAL steel objects in different conditions and see what makes them look like that ??
C- Where does the light come from ?
When you look to an object in order to mimic it you have to pay attention to light
source .. Also don’t mix shadow to texture ...also the type of the light affect how the object look , an object under dark light or day light or colored light or cloudy day light
does not look the same ...all this affect the color contrast and saturation of the object.

D- Why do you look like this ?
You should look to the object and analyze it’s surface components , what is part of
the original material , what is coming from out side (such as shadow , or reflection of
other objects ) is there a dust component , is there scratches ? Is there bumpiness this way I can decide how to mimic it on my PC , I will use this map to mimic the bumpiness , this one to make the effect of reflection , this map with box uvwmap to make thing over here ...and so on ...

E- Where is my Object ?
Let me ask you some thing , A Chair ... in a school , in a park , in an office ...
A Cup ... in an a banded radio station in Alaska ... on my working desk or in a market
shelf for sale ? The same object ...but will they look the same ?? NOOP , ask your
self, how whould each of them look like ?

F- What is the color of the Object ?
Well , thats an easy one ... actually ..NOOOO it is not as easy at it look like ... only
few objects can be in one solid color , most of them are mixture of many colors ...
ok right now ...look to the palm of your hand ...right now ..stare closely ................
    ................... .................................................. .................................................. ..

    .................................................. .................................................. ......................

    .................................................. .................................................. ......................

    .................................................. .................
What is the color of your hand ... or should I say , what are the colorS of your
hand’s palm ? ... when I looked to my hand I noticed that it is not light brown as
I used to think ... it was a mixture of some yellow and light read , some light blue
( no my father did not hit me .... it was my wife !!...... Just a minute !! I am
not married ??? ohhhh I think I need a shrink !!) Ok the light blue were my veins
(the tubes inside my body that blood runs in !!)
Look around you and collect 3-5 objects with the color of black , or white or what
ever color .... are they the same ?? No .. You got lots of variance of the same color ..
before you say that this object is blue or red take a good long look at it then decide .. .also it is good to use a black card or white one , put near the color ...now ..does the
color look different ... colors affect each other ...they don’t look the same when they
are surrounded with other colors. Look to a complex color and try to know what is the
color of a small spot ... open an image in photo shop (or what ever painting program you use ) and try to tell the color of a small spot , now use the eye drop tool to know the color ....are you surprised !!

G- Is the object transparent ?
-how much the object is clear
    -Is it colored transparency?
    -Is it textured transparency?

H- Is the object Luminous ?
Is my object emitting light ...
Is that light from the object it self or from out side the object (such as a paper ,
when you look to it in front of a light source it looks Luminous )
Is it emitting light with heat (like hot iron) or with out heat (like lighting fish , or neon
    light).

I- How does the object feel like ?
Is it cold or hot .... how would temperature affect my texture ..... before you
    continue reading try to answer that question .................................................. .................................................. .................................................. .................................................. .................................................. .................................................. .................................................. .................................................. .................................................. .................................................. .................................................. .................................................. .................................................. .................................................. .................................................. .................................................. .................................................. .................................................. .................................................. .................................................. .................................................. .................................................. .................................................. .................................................. .................................................. .................................................. .................................................. .................................................. .................................................. .................................................. .................................................. .................................................. .................................................. .................................................. .................................................. .................................................. .................................................. ..........
A hot surface is dry , and dry surfaces usually are not shiny or light reflecting also if
it is too hot, it might start glowing or some part of it ... hot surfaces usually decay faster
.... so a usual hot surface is more likely yo have faint colors ,rough surface ....
Cold surface on the other hand ...might form water drops , form ice , very freezing
object might crack as well ... what else ...can you think of more ...tell us ..how cold temperature affect texture ??
Also ...is there bumpiness over my object surface ...i.e. when light hit the surface ..
    will it form shadows ?
Is the surface Rough ... why is it rough ?? Is dents , or scratches or is it corrasion ?
Is it smooth and why ...is it because it is polished , or is it because it is painted ,
is it reflecting and how much , and what is the quality if the reflection .

J- What is the object story ??
One of the most fun question to ask and is very important ....

Let say that I want to design a fighting robot in an abandoned military warehouse ...
If I ask about his story it will help me a lot to know how will it look like.

Ok Robot F-23-R what is your story ....and here what he says ...
“ I was a war robot ,bipedal model, the F-23-R ,code name “walking lizard” (what
kind of stupid name is that ??) I was designed for desert combat , I have joined in 23
    major battles ,97 small combats , 124 watch patrols , 64 escort , and 4 rescue
operations (wow , his feet must be killing him ) after the end of war I was out of service
due to the immediate cuts in the budget , all money goes to heal the wounds of war ...
so I ended in a military bunker at H32-S base that was eventually abandoned”
    (Poor Thing ...)

Ok ...now how would you think this poor “walking lizard” look like??
From what we know it is a desert robot ...so it’s main color would be sand camouflage
also it is F-23-R model ..so we expect to see that printed on it’s body, right ..also
it’s code name “walking Lizard” we should expect too see that printed some where .. We know that its feet are killing it ( it walked a lot on the hot sand ) how do you think the
lower part of it’s body look like , huge feet walking on hot dry sand under heavy weight ..
who would it look like after lots of desert storms
Also ..it joined in a lot of combats ...so ... what does this mean ...lots of hits here
and there ,bullet holes , scratches , due to explosions ...not only that .... after a lot of combats it must have been under a lot of fast maintenance ....so we should expect to
see some parts different from the others , some parts are new , some are taken from another robot as spare parts after sustaining heavy damage, they will not care about coloring and painting the parts since they need it as fast as possible back to the battle .
After the war ...the placed it in a bunker in the H32-S desert base ...should we see
that printed some where I don’t think so ... how would you expect it will look like after kept long time in that bunker .... that bunker should be in the desert since they don’t have lots of budget to move it around to a more cold place , and since low budget , we should expect that it was placed just like that , no good storing condition , and now the base is abandoned... so how our robot will look like ...the place is hot , in desert , so we should expect dust lots of dust actually you should expect sand ... also rust over it’s body ...
but if it was a very cold place , we might expect a layer of froze and no rust .... if it was
a wet place we should expect rust and algie ( the green thing that form over wet surfaces )

    Poooooooor little “walking lizard”

ok , that’s all ....for now ...hope that you found this useful and I hope you enjoyed it as
well ,by the way ... I have learned about that from a very nice book “digital texturing and painting” by Owen Demers ....
    Love

r3ad : maybe soon i will post some thing about the material editor ....
by the way ...almost half of the book was theoritcal study about textureing and colors , the other half was practical , but he uses photoshop and Maya ...
i did not finish the book yet , but it is very good one , i recommend that book
