Key CAT2.5 Features
Rigging
New Gizmo system
Selecting and editing of bones can be tedious if the mesh covers up your skeleton. CAT now provides gizmos for making the manipulation of CATRigs faster and easier. With one click a gizmo can be added to your CAT bone, and then all editing of the bone can be performed via the Gizmo allowing. Gizmos can be parented together into a hierarchy that makes your characters faster to navigate.
Key Framing
Copy Paste Poses and Animation
New copy and paste feature for quickly copying and pasting of poses and animation for hubs limbs, hands, feet, and tails. The workflow is a simple Copy and Paste of poses and keyframes speeding up the keyframing of CAT characters even more.
New Pose Mixer tool.
For studios using bone based facial animation, the pose mixer tool provides a fast intuitive workflow that allows artists to animate CAT in the same way they would normally work using morph targets. A library of poses are defined and then loaded onto the facial rig using a weighted value. Poses can automatically be mirrored while loading onto the face reducing the required number of poses required. This brings the effective workflow of a morpher based system to a bones based facial setup, while giving the artist more freedom to edit bone interpolation manually.
CATMotion
New Walk Modes
CATMotion now includes 3 'Walk Modes'. 'Walk on spot', 'Walk on Line', and 'Path node'. The new feature being of course, the new ‘Walk on Line’ function. When defining a walkcycle it helps to be able to see the character walking along taking steps correctly as it would if the character were moving forwards. In walk on Line Modes, no path node is required, and the character will move in a straight line at the ideal velocity for the cycle taking steps as it would if it were using a path node.
Gradient and Direction controls
CATMotion now includes controls for gradient and direction. This allows you to design a broader range of cycles for more conditions. If you need to design a walk cycle for walking backwards for example, a setting of 180 degrees in the direction value will make the character walk backwards. The Gradient control determines a slope that the character will walk up, and this parameter is useful for defining cycles for walking up or down slopes.
Motion Capture
Cap layers for better interpolation
New ‘Cap’ layer type uses TCB interpolated rotation controllers for smoother interpolation of dense keyframe data. Euler controllers may exhibit irregular interpolation between keyframes due to the problems introduced by Gimbal.
Pipeline Tools
Batch importer
For productions relying on transfer of assets from one application to another, or for studios that are working heavily with Motion Capture, this tool provides an reliable workflow for importing data into Max. All of the import formats supported by CAT are supported by the batch importer, and proprietary formats can easily be added using script.
Batch Exporter
For Game developers wishing to streamline their pipelines, CAT now provides a well written simple to use Batch Exporter. The Batch Exporter is written using script, allowing studios to easily customize the exporter specify to their engine requirements.
